What happens when the earth warms by an average of only 2 degrees? Devastating effects on oceans, cities, topography and more. The world will be much drier, which will impact economies, agriculture, infrastructure, and weather patterns. We’re already seeing these effects as climate change slowly impacts where we live, where we work, and where we play. One of the ways this warming trend is rearing its ugly head is by way of destructive forest fires in many areas around the world. 

In the small town of Lytton, British Columbia, an all-time high Canadian temperature was recorded on June 27th, 2021 of 46.6 C (115.8 F). The next day, Lytton smashed its own record by reaching 47.5 C (117.5 F). On a third straight day, Lytton crushed its record again by reaching 49.5 C (121.1 F). Sadly, due to the extreme heat and dry conditions, when a fire was sparked just outside the town, it quickly spread. Residents were forced to flee their homes with only minutes notice. Approximately 90% of the town was destroyed and most tragically, two lives were lost. 

The consensus among leading climate scientists is that weather patterns will continue to become more extreme. People will continue to lose their homes, their businesses and even their lives. With so many stories of local and global hardship regularly showing in our current events, it can cause feelings of helplessness, anxiousness, and frustration. We can’t change the past but we can contribute in the present to the health of the planet for the future.
